Some might have called it a mid-life crisis, he called it Instill Distillery Co.
Rum distilling is Eric’s passion and he is on a mission—a mission to create the best American rum possible and with his drive and dedication, he will surely make it happen. Considering their white rum won gold at the 2020 John Barleycorn Awards, his Instill Distillery is off to a great start. So, what better way to toast their achievements than with a nip from each one of their delicious rums. Cheers!

On each episode, Drew and his guests share their insights and expertise about drinking in Jewish wisdom, history and tradition. Getting tipsy while gaining knowledge, you know we support those efforts.
Epi 151 :: Bridget Fritle :: Founder :: Rockaway Sparkling Beverages
With a mind for business and a soul for spirits, Bridget started her career on Wall Street at a hedge fund as a consumer goods investor with a focus in alcoholic beverage companies. But being a brilliant overachiever, Bridget then set her sights even higher, and in 2012, she founded NYC’s only rum distillery. But that again wasn’t enough, she recently sold her rum distillery and launched her newest venture, Rockaway—a functional sparkling beverage.
Bridget brings her sparkling beverages and personality to the show to add some “functional” bubbles to the Gina’s cocktail recipes and effervescence to the conversation. Her Rockaway sparkling beverages are delicious and a great way to add a bit of “healthy” drinking to your cocktailing. We like to think it’s a “2 birds, 1 stone scenario.” You know, detoxing while you’re retoxing. Win. Win.

Epi 148 :: Jill Barkley Roy :: Affiliate Director :: Emerge
Featured cocktail recipe: Changing Fashion
Jill is out to change the world, one vote at a time. As the Affiliate Director for Emerge America, she oversees and manages all of the national organization’s work with its state affiliates. So, what does that mean? That means Jill is one busy bee, for sure. Along with the rest of the Emerge team, she recruits democratic women to run for office and gives them the training, tools and connections to run successful campaigns. For any woman, that’s inspiring.
Jill’s political aspirations started early in life. As a very young girl, she was inspired by her father’s involvement in local politics, and ran for student president with a catchy campaign slogan of, “Don’t be a turkey, vote for Barkley.” This early win would be a foreshadowing of what was yet to come. As a card holding democrat, Jill successfully organized Republicans United for Marriage for the Yes on One campaign, which granted the freedom to marry to every Maine couple in 2012.
As if that wasn’t enough, she’s a former Chair of the Portland Democratic City Committee, and Co-Founder of Pride Portland!. She has been honored twice as Portland’s Best Activist by the Portland Phoenix, and honored with leadership awards from the League of Young Voters and Equality Maine. So needless to say, if we find Jill’s name on a ballot, she will definitely get our vote.
Epi 147 :: Bill Butcher :: Founder/President :: Port City Brewing
Get the featured cocktail :: Monumental Boilermaker
“A professional wino walks into a brewery,” could be a start to many a joke, but what’s not a joke is how beer aficionado, Bill Butcher, approaches crafting beer. He has spent his entire adult life in the booze business. After an 18-year stint in the fine wine business, Bill caught the brewing bug which led to the birth of Port City Brewing.
In 2011, Bill saw an opportunity: there was no packaging brewery in the DC area. So, with his love for craft beer, expertise in fine wine sales and brand building smarts, Port City Brewing was born. At neck-breaking speeds, it quickly became a leader in the DC and Mid-Atlantic markets. Since then, they have been honored many times, including 11 medals at the Great American Beer Festival, and were named Small Brewing Company of the Year in 2015. They now distribute in eight Mid-Atlantic states, the United Kingdom and France. Wow, we think that deserves a toast!
Epi 146 :: Kelsey Ryan :: Singer / Songwriter :: The Trigger
GET THE FEATURED RECIPE :: kentucky snow cone
Kelsey Ryan—a country singer/songwriter—shares her personal journey behind “The Trigger,” her first, but definitely not her last, album. Her music is beautiful and her soulful style to storytelling takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride that is as heartbreaking, as it is empowering.
“The Trigger,” Kelsey’s debut album, is at the intersection of raw sincerity and pure sass that harkens back to the legacies of the tough-as-nails country women we all know. Her approach to music is authentic and she doesn’t shy away from sharing her vulnerabilities or her tenacity. Every lyric of this album is meaningful to her journey through violence, abuse, female empowerment, heartbreak, and of course, her affinity towards whiskey.
Epi 145:: Chris Bassett :: Chef / Bartender / Owner :: CBbassWithDill Catering
GET THE FEATURED RECIPE :: BRONX COCKTAIL
Chris knows first-hand how having a little crazy in your life is a good thing—no wonder he’s friends with Louise! The ever-changing F&B industry has always kept him on his toes—from the heat in kitchen to his dance behind the bar—the unpredictability of a life in hospitality is Chris’ true calling. It definitely helped prepare him for the drama that comes along with being the husband to a Real Housewife of Potomac.
One may wonder if Chris picked the hospitality industry or if the hospitality industry picked Chris. It is a world that he has found much success even though it has never let him rest on his laurels. The proof in that pudding can be found in his catering company, CBassWithDill. Not looking to feed the masses and just want to add a little spice to your meal prep while picking-up a few pro tips and tricks? Then join Chris on one of his on-line cooking classes at TryHungry.com. Along with culinary insights, maybe he’ll share some insider’s knowledge on the Real Housewives of Potomac, too. You never know!
Epi 144 :: GARRETT MARRERO :: OWNER :: MAUI BREWING
GET THE FEATURED RECIPE :: GARRETT’S TEQUILA SELTZY
In Hawaii, ʻohana means family and Garrett is definitely apart of ours—he and Louise might just be cut from the same agave plant. In early 2005, Garrett co-founded Maui Brewing Company and since then, he has become a key player in Hawaii’s business scene and MBC is now the rainbow state’s largest craft brewery. But this epi is all about their newest line-up of delicious beverages: their Kupu Spirits, Hawaii’s first canned cocktails, and their Maui Hard Seltzers, which are so 'ono.
At the mere age of 26, Garrett fell in love with Maui but with all she had to offer, something was still missing: craft beer. So, this lover of beer heard opportunity a-knockin’ and set out to create a local brewery that would craft authentically Hawaii-inspired brews—and Maui Brewing Company was born. But of course, he and his team didn’t stop with just an amazing line-up of beers, their Kupu Spirits canned cocktails and Maui Hard Seltzers are equally crushable.
Epi 143 :: Edith Bullard :: ACLU Of Virginia :: Dir Of Communications
Just meeting Edith makes you a better person. No, really. Edith Bullard has a super power. Okay, she actually has two. She has the ability to make time, and in a single bound, she can help people in-need. She may not be able to leap over tall builds but she can overcome what may appear as impossible hurdles or unsurmountable challenges. With all that Edith does to give back to the world, she definitely qualifies as a superhero in our eyes.
As if being the Director of Communication for the ACLU of Virginia isn’t enough, Edith always makes “giving back” a priority. She actually makes being charitable look easy and the rest of us look down-right lazy. For her, giving back is a selfish act, since as she puts it, she gets back more than she puts in. So, where does she choose to spend her “free time?” Well it’s with organizations like, Village Med where she helps Haitians in distressed areas get access to the pediatric healthcare they so desperately need. And when she feeling less ambitious, she’s fighting for equal opportunity for the women of the world. No really, she’s actively involved in Change International—a humanitarian organization that has empowered over 250,000 vulnerable women and children in 30 countries across North and South America, Africa and Europe. And for her homeward board efforts, Edith she serves on the board of directors of Carpenter’s Shelter—a shelter serving more than 784 homeless and formerly homeless people in Northern Virginia. And if that’s not enough, for many years, she has been involved with Food and Friends—an organization with a mission of delivering nutritious meals to those battling serious illnesses in the DC/Virginia/Maryland area. Wow. Just wow. So, if you’re feeling inspired as much as we are by this amazing woman, please volunteer at an organization that brings good into the world, fights for justice for all and helps our fellow man. You never know, you too might just earn your superhero brightly-colored bodysuit, just like Edith!
Epi 142 :: Jason La Valla :: Founder :: Casamara Club Amaro Sodas
Jason reminds us, there’s more than just one path in life and there’s no such thing as the right path—we only have our own path. Shortly after starting life as a corporate lawyer, he soon came to realize it wasn’t the life he wanted. What he wanted was to create something new and exciting. He needed and wanted more—more amaro and more bubbles in his life—which led to his Casamara Club Amaro Sodas.
Jason’s love for the complex flavors of a true Italian classic, amaro, and his obsession for the effervescence of flavored seltzers are the foundation to his Casamara Club Amaro Sodas. These deliciously unique sodas are unlike anything we’ve tried. They are savory, bubbly and perfectly refreshing without being overly sweet, making them the perfect match for any spirit your heart desires or just straight out of the bottle.
Epi 141 :: Kelly Grant :: Partner :: AXL Community
Positive Energy = Kelly Grant. At intersection of working, learning and giving, you find Kelly’s pride and joy, the AXL Community, which is located at the waterfront of Old Town Alexandria, VA—a communal work space that’s thoughtfully designed, beautifully located and comes with all the latest- and-greatest technology and safety measures. But it’s so much more than just a communal workspace, Kelly and her team go to great measures to create a community where their members share business insights, develop strong professional networks and work together to give back to local charities and organizations. Oh, and they are dog-friendly, too—so you know Louise is a big fan!
Kelly has poured her heart and soul into developing the AXL Community and it shows. As visitors, we were warmly welcomed by her team and members, alike, which speaks to her commitment in building a flexible workspace that feels like home. In her spare time (insert laugh track here), she focuses on giving back and leans on the strengths and willingness of her membership to help those in need in their local community. Recently, she has teamed-up with The Garden to create the Alexandria Drive-In, a family-focused drive-in movie theatre series that run on Saturday nights through October 3, 2020. All of the proceeds from these efforts benefit local Alexandria charities ACT for Alexandria and Athena Rapid Response. The series is sold out, but you can still get on the wait list. They are currently working on developing the next series, so stay-tuned to get your ticket.
Epi 140 :: SHAWNA MENDELSON :: WORLD CHAMPION POWERLIFTER :: BLUE COLLAR BARBELL
Obviously, as one of the five Strongest Women of All Time and a world champion powerlifter and strength athlete, Shawna exudes strength—both mental and physical. She’s dedicated her life to being her best self so she can play it forward and help others do the same. Each and every day, she wakes with a structured plan to keep herself—and those she’s training—in tiptop shape and fit for life.
As a strength coach at her own gym, the Blue Collar Barbell, Shawna’s dynamic result-driven philosophies help others become a healthier and a stronger version of themselves. For her, fitness is a way of life which is quite clear considering she can easily deadlift a compact car! On record, her best lifts to date are 700lb squat, 455lb bench press, and a 525lb deadlift. Now that’s what we call dedication.
EPI139 :: Cat Ramey :: Animal Communicator
Cat Ramey. She’s an animal communicator. She’s a telepath. And she’s blowing Louise & Gina’s minds. They both had so many questions for Cat, from Gina’s, “Does my cat hate me?” to Louise’s, “Do animals tell you their owner’s dirty little secrets?” Which she asked a bit too late, considering days before this epi was recorded, Cat had a session with Louise’s little black lab, Olivia, who apparently spilled the beans! According to Cat, anyone can learn to communicate telepathically. Well almost anyone—you just need to be able to calm and clear your mind—which means, we won’t lose our 2 hosts to second careers in telepathy.
15 years ago, Cat decided to take classes to learn how to communicate with animals after her grandmother lost her dog and an animal communicator helped locate him. Since then, she’s been honing her skills by chatting up animals both domestic and feral, alike. First hand, we saw Cat’s abilities in action when she communicated with Louise’s 2-year old Labrador, which left Louise is tears and totally amazed. To say this epi goes straight to the dogs, is totally an understatement.
Epi 138 :: Jay Lewis :: Ceo/Founder :: Canine Dominion
It’s the dog days of summer, so who better to spend the day with than the CEO/Founder of Canine Dominion, Jay Lewis? He’s spent his life honing his dog training skills—including 12 years in the US Air Force—which is a good thing because not only is he a Designated Drinker, he works with Louise to help train her dogs. According to Jay, the key to solid training is consistency and leadership, which means, his efforts are really spent training Louise. And we all know that’s one hell of a job that requires an awful a lot of patience. May Jay find strength!
Dogs have always been a way of life for Jay. At the ripe old age of 6 years, he started learning the art of dog training from a neighbor and he was hooked. While serving in US Air Force, he adopted a philosophy he still lives by—proper training never fails. This is the foundation to his Canine Dominion, where humane treatment is the only option. What is painfully obvious in Jay’s approach—no matter if he’s working with the family pet or a hardworking dog with a job—is his love and commitment to man’s best friend.
Epi 137 :: Meghan Slyvester, LPN :: Holistic Health Nurse :: Hullistic Health
Meghan’s journey into holistic health started when she was a nurse at her patient’s bedside treating symptoms with traditional medications. Seeing her “frequent flyers,” those patients that continuously rotated through the hospital, inspired her to look for alternative therapies—those that can heal, not just treat the symptoms.
Taking a holistic approach to health, Meghan integrates her in-depth nursing background with her knowledge and experience in using food, nutritional and herbal supplements—along with a few suggestions about lifestyle—to help restore her client’s health and well-being. As the Center Director of Hullistic Health, she works hard to understand each client’s unique needs and builds a program that helps them find balance and become a healthier version of themselves. Cheers to that!
Epi 136 :: Mother Epi-ing Hijackers :: Micheline Mendelsohn :: Deputy CEO of Sunnyside Restaurant Group
If you look up the word “hustle” in the dictionary, you’ll find a portrait of Micheline with her daily to-do list in hand. She’s one of Gina’s closest friends, the mother of three and the Deputy CEO of Sunnyside Restaurant Group, where she oversees the development of all their restaurant concepts, from inception to opening day. On top of that, she manages the on-going marcomm for We, The Pizza, Santa Rosa Taqueria and Good Stuff Eatery as well as managing all their franchisee relationships. It’s all in a day for this badass, relentless, loving, dedicated, not afraid to admit she fails, perfectly imperfect working mom.
This one is totally Mother-Eping Hijacked by Gina and Micheline. With a delicious perfect-for-summer-cocktail and tons of laughs, these two hardworking mothers share some hard truths on parenting, their challenges of finding a good life/work balance and offer some sage advice on how to keep it all in perspective during this pandemic.
Epi 135 :: Scott Harris :: Co-Founder :: Catoctin Creek
So, two engineers walk into a bar and somehow, leave as distillers. Well, that’s kinda’ how Scott and his wife Becky—both engineers—started Catoctin Creek, the first legal distillery in their home county since Prohibition. Which is no joke, indeed.
Scott was going through his self-proclaimed mid-life crisis. His career as an IT engineer, although very successful, was no longer fulfilling and left him wanting more from his professional life. What was the cure? Leaving it all behind and opening a distillery, of course. His first challenge would be convincing his wife. Thinking this might be a momentary flight of fancy for Scott, Becky agreed on one condition, Scott had to write the business plan, prove it was a sound investment and secure the funds. To both of their surprise, Scott did it. So in 2009, with enough funds to get the business off the ground and a scrappy mentality, they successfully distilled, and quickly got into distribution, their whiskey, moonshine and gin. Since then, their spirit line-up has grown tremendously. Each of their products is expertly crafted using carefully selected grains and locally sourced fruits that are free of pesticides and chemical additives. All resulting in some of the finest, cleanest spirits possible. Cheers to Catoctin Creek!
Epi 134 :: Adam Greenberg :: Celebrity Chef :: Owner of Coconut Club & Subbies
We like to say the “4th times the charm” and charm is something Adam Greenberg has in spades. He joins Louise and Gina to talk about working through the pandemic and how they’re changing things up. By reworking the space of his island-inspired Coconut Club and leveraging his ability to think—and act—quick on his feet, they are making it work.
Adam’s original concept for the Coconut Club was to deliver a fun-filled, beach-inspired party experience but with the pandemic, he was forced to rethink this approach. So, he and his team quickly pivoted their business model, thought beyond the negative and fortunately, Subbies was born. Along side Coconut Club’s island-style tasty meals and cocktails made to go, they are serving up delicious sub sandwiches that are mini-vacations between bread. It’s hospitality in a bag. #crushsubbies
Epi 133 :: Gregor Collins :: Author & Storymaker
Gregor lives life by grabbing the unexpected by the horns. By letting go of the “shoulds” and the “have tos,” life has taken him on some adventures he would have never imagined. Starting with a cross country move from Florida to Cali in his trusty Geo Tracker, led him to wrangling reality tv personalities with his commanding clipboard which eventually led him to meeting, and caring for, the great love of his life who inspired him to publish not one, but two books.
Gregor started out producing reality TV, but he later found a love for acting—let it be the stage, television or an Indie film—his inner thespian just needed an outlet. Although, life had more instore for him. After taking a side hustle job as a caregiver for 92 year-old Holocaust refugee, Maria Altmann, his life changed in ways he never thought possible. His time spent with this fascinating woman inspired his book, “The Accidental Caregiver,” which he describes as one part memoir, one part art and European history, and one part love story. The connection between Maria and Gregor was obviously strong, since he will soon release his second book, “The Accidental Caregiver, PART 2.”
Epi 132 :: Valerie Nalls :: Marketing Specialist & VP :: Nalls Produce
Valerie may not have envisioned building her career within the family business but little did she know, it would be her calling. It wasn’t always easy, but with a little time and a lot patience, the family learned to empower each other and give each other the room they needed to grow professionally—all which has contributed to the strength and success their business today.
Of course, family business comes with complications but for Valerie, it’s a true blessing. Her professional life is fully entwined with her family life, and she couldn’t be happier. She focused her marketing smarts to strengthen the Nalls Produce brand, innovate their communications and extend their digital presence. Important for any business, of course, but once COVID hit her local area, her efforts truly made a difference in their ability to communicate with their patrons and assure them they were still open for busy. By implementing a few new safety measures, and quickly pivoting their business model, they were able to continue offering fresh produce and groceries in a safe and secure space. She’s definitely one smart cookie.
Epi 131 :: Gardner Douglas :: Host :: Oyster Ninja Podcast
For us, Gardner embodies a simple but meaningful philosophy, “Good people bring out the good in people.” He’s an awarding-winning oyster shuck and host of his own podcast, Oyster Ninja, and his refreshing outlook on life is contagious.

Epi 130 :: Tad Carducci :: Ambassador to the Americas :: Amaro Montenegro
If you look up bon vivant in the dictionary, you will simply find a photo of this Sultan of Swoon. Tad is definitely a man about town and has a true passion for ‘the good life.’ Before taking on his current role as the Ambassador to the Americas for Amaro Montenegro, he was a founding partner of The Tippler, a cavernous cocktail bar under Manhattan’s famed Chelsea Market and the co-founder of Tippling Bros., a New York-based beverage consultancy. Why is Tad perfect for his current role as the Ambassador to the Americas for Amaro Montenegro? Well, he is a self-proclaimed food and beverage lifer, award-winning mixologist, author, educator, presenter and drinks consultant with over 30-years of experience in hospitality. And like amaro, his heritage traces back to Italy, he’s a bit smooth, definitely complex and makes for an excellent excuse to linger over lunch and dally after dinner.
Epi 129 :: Lauren Jones :: Founder :: T-Aware Apparel
“Stand Tall, Speak Volumes.” Those empowering words are brought to you by a very creative young woman—Lauren Jones. Life’s hardships drove her to turn a simple t-shirt into a medium of motivation. Her simple—yet powerful—message challenges us to be think bigger, to stand together and to unite our voices so we may all find the peace we need to begin the healing process.
Lauren may not have originally set out to create her inspirational clothing line, T-Aware Apparel but sometimes life sends us on a journey we would have never imagine for ourselves. Although, Lauren does not describe herself as very outspoken, she definitely found a creative way for her voice to be heard and the world is better for it. Not to mention, better dressed.

Poet Taylor. She’s a broadcast maven, lover of bacon and the host of Midday Shenanigans. When she’s not filling the airways with her positivity and contagious joy for life, she’s bringing awareness to the plight of children in the foster care system and their need for loving homes and forever families. This is an initiative that is near-and- dear to her heart, since she too grew up “in the system.”
Poet is an influential multi-media personality, yes. But she is so much more. When she walks into a room, her energy fills the space and her lust for life is intoxicating. She is definitely someone who betters the world and the people she’s around. So, if she calls you friend, you should count yourself as one of the lucky ones. For your daily dose of her inspiring straight-forward insightfulness and advice on navigating any obstacle into a workable solution, tune-in to her radio show on WERQ FM—Baltimore or find her all over your social media channel of choice.
Epi 126 :: Kris Moon :: COO :: James Beard Foundation
With a name like Kris Moon, how could you not reach for the stars? He’s a virtuoso of the ivories, a trained opera singer and now the Chief Operating Officer for one of the most respected organizations in the culinary world, the James Beard Foundation. He's living proof of nominative determinism, a theory which hypothesis that people tend to gravitate towards areas of work that fit their names. Yes, he is a superstar!
Kris Moon is incredibly talented and now as the COO of JBF, he is focusing all his efforts on Open For Good, their campaign to “help independent restaurants survive this crisis, rebuild better, and thrive for the long term.” The program provides critical resources to help independent restaurants build the capacity to come back stronger, more equitable, more sustainable and more resilient. On this epi, we are hanging out the legend himself, H. Joseph Ehrmann. As a bar owner—even for one of the most renowned bars in the US—surviving the pandemic shut down is a harrowing and daunting task. For Lisa, generosity starts in the home. So, it makes sense that the same sense of generosity went on to become the foundation to her professional success. It’s always nice to hear a good guy can finish first.
Epi 116:: Joe Ambrose :: Founder :: Favourite Ice Company
Shortcuts don’t work. You have to work hard to get ahead. These are wise words and exactly what Joe lives by. He’s long been a part of the craft cocktail movement, so his progression into pioneering a new frontier, artisanal ice, just made sense.
Why artisanal ice? Sure, it’s pretty, but the real selling point is that super-sized cubes melt more slowly, which allows you more time to enjoy that hand-crafted cocktail. So of course, we think Joe is pretty damn cool and so are his crystal-clear cubes.
To experience the difference his ice makes, head over to Archipelago (he’s a co-owner) for a delicious, perfectly-crafted cocktail.

This early life experience—or as Melanie would call it, “divine intervention”—set into motion her journey to becoming the founder of Macchu Pisco, the first woman-founded pisco export business.
With unwavering persistence, shear tenacity and a very supportive family, Melanie has turned her childhood dream into a successful business that does good as she makes good. She has been recognized many times for their on-going involvement in organizations promoting fair trade, their pledge to pay fair wages for farmers and crop pickers and their commitment to work exclusively with a select group of growers who deploy only natural, healthy growing practices. Yes, all at the ripe old age of 6 years. He went on to earn a scholarship to attend college with a major in radio, television and film--all of this perfecting the entertaining host he would eventually become. Now as a brand ambassador in a space that is unbiased, creative and challenging, he wakes in cities across our great nation to work his magic introducing the world to the unusual and curious spirit that is Hendricks Gin and he’s loving every minute of it.

At 2 years old, Laura announced she would become a food critic. Now how she knew what that meant, who knows? But time has proven 2 year-old Laura’s proclamation wasn’t far off. As the food editor and Young & Hungry columnist at Washington City Paper, she is so much more than a critic. Her words impact more than where one might choose to dine or which bar is reported as the “place to be scene.” She also dives into current trends and issues impacting bars and restaurants, touching on mental health, labor, race, immigration, the environment and food access. Doing good while eating and drinking well, now that’s something we can all get behind.

Yes, getting schooled can be fun.
Epi 103 :: Casey Patten :: Grazie Grazie :: Founder
If we could put Tigger the Tiger, capocollo and Jamieson Whiskey between bread, we’d have one tasty treat and we’d name it, Casey Patten. Or as we like to call him, the Sandwich Shaman.
As we hang out at Gina’s new late night joint, Last Call, she serves up 2 shaman-worthy cocktails while Casey shares his journey from startup to success to “forced retirement” and back again. Throughout it all, he never lost his belief in leading with his heart, following his passions and to always treat people well. Oh, yeah. And to never forget to have fun while doing it.
Now, as he re-invents himself with his latest “meat on bread” venture, Grazie Grazie, he brings together all those valuable life lessons, passion for great food and the belief in amazing hospitality to the DC Wharf. For those of us in the DC area, aren’t we a lucky bunch!
As if that weren’t enough to make you fall in love with him, he is also the culinary chair for DC’s premier “party with a purpose,” The Chance For Life Event. This annual event is part amateur poker tournament, part food tasting, party music concert and every dollar raised goes to support childhood cancer research.
Epi 102 :: Lucia Peters :: Freelance Writer / Author :: Dangerous Games to Play In The Dark
On this epi, we fill Gina’s newly opened bar, Last Call, with all kinds of spirits–and not just the kind she pours over ice–as we sit down with Lucia Peters, the author of the recently published book, “Dangerous Games To Play In The Dark.”
What can one expect to find within the pages of Lucia’s guide to summoning spirits? Well, in the forward she writes, “you might, therefore, think of this book as a sort of modern-day grimoire: a compendium of contemporary supernatural rituals–part encyclopedia, part instruction manual and part storybook–intended to guide you through the shadowy world of today’s urban legend games.” We would simply say it’s a super fun, spooky read that takes you back to those childhood games that scared the bejesus out of all of us.
Lucia also haunts readers with spooky stories of the strange and unusual on her website, The Ghost In My Machine. And as a freelance writer, she puts her talent of spinning words into stories to a diverse array of subjects. She’s covered from food and wine, to web culture, to technology, to career matters, to money matters, to pets, to true crimes, to true crime committed by pets…okay, maybe we went too far, but you get the idea. She’s a true master of conjuring spellbinding tales.

What is the FINvitational? It’s a day spent on the Chesapeake hanging with good friends, eating some of the finest seafood, tipping back a few cocktails and living to tell your “big fish” stories. It is indeed, a very good day.
On this epi, Jamie Swanson from Congressional Seafood plays cruise director, as our guest barkeep, Brian “The Pirate” McSwain whips up one of Gina’s tasty cocktails and Neil Dunfee as co-host, definitely keeps it all from capsizing. Oh yeah, celebrity chef, Adam Greenberg takes a break from the festivities to update us on his newly opened, Coconut Club.
Epi 98 :: Lex Soler & Angela Laino :: Co-Owners :: Flamingo Cocktail Club
2 amazing chicks. 1 amazing patio. Lex Soler and Angela Laino sit down with us on the patio of their Miami-inspired cocktail lounge, the Flamingo Club. The concept is cool but not as cool as these 2 badass bartenders turned entrepreneurs, who have renovated a church into a zero-waste craft cocktail bar with a plant-based food menu in the heart of Nashville.
Beyond serving perfectly crafted cocktails, The Flamingo Club is a place where communities come together, ideas are exchanged, friendships are forged and memories are made.
Epi 97 :: Ann Madden and Sandy Maggio :: Artists :: Co-Owners Smith & Lens
As Ann and Sandy both say, Smith & Lens is so much more than a gallery of just 4-walls and we couldn’t agree more. Just like the founders, it’s a little bit quirky, totally unique and a whole lot creative. The walls are adorned with works by various artists, to include Ann’s thoughtful, yet a bit rebellious approach to photography and mix media pieces. As a silversmith, Sandy handcrafts metal into stunning jewelry, hollowware bowls and so much more. Each piece is truly a unique work of art.
Unleashing their creative spirits outside of their gallery, these two amazing women have established two can’t-miss festivals. Every January, head to Bay St. Louis for Dolly Should, a fest to celebrate Dolly Parton’s birthday with a Dolly look-alike contest, all sorts vendors and delicious food, of course. If you’re looking for a bit of Frida fun, then start growing your unibrow now and get your floral headband ready for Frida Fest. Oh, and don’t even get us started on about Chris’ amazing head of locks.
When Chris isn’t gallivanting across the globe inspiring and empowering bartenders, he is focusing on Simple Serve, a trade-focused marketing agency, and Bartender’s Weekend in San Diego, an annual event he founded with his business partner and long-time friend, Erick Castro. Damn, Chris is one busy dude. Cheers to him.

Before he signed on at NOCHI, Zak was an instructor at the prestigious Culinary Institute of American in Hyde Park New York. And before heading into the world of academia, he was whipping up his pastry delights at numerous award-winning restaurants and hotels across the country. Some had stars and others had diamonds, but none came with as much brass as 1600 Pennsylvania. Yep, that’s right. Zak had the honor of serving as guest chef at the White House. Now that just takes the cake.

Now, as he heads up the U.S. Hendrick’s Gin team of brand ambassadors, he’s bringing the unusual and curious Hendrick’s Gin brand world to life and introducing their newest additions to their unique line-up of gins, Midsummer Solstice and Orbium.
